Marvel Studios have confirmed Oscar nominated actor, Stanley Tucci has joined the cast of Joe Johnston’s upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger. Tucci will play Doctor Abraham Erskine, the brains behind the Super Soldier Serum, which creates the title character.
Tucci is far from the first Oscar recognized actor to venture into the comic book genre. Winners Halle Berry and Anna Paquin donned skin-tight leather while fighting off twice nominated Ian McKellen in the x-men films. Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Heath Ledger, and Maggie Gyllenhaal teamed up for the box office smash The Dark Knight. Marvel Studio’s Iron Man franchise is filled with Oscar considered talent. Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr, was nominated twice as was his best friend Rhodey-Once by Terrence Howard and once by Don Cheadle. Gwenyth Paltrow took home her statue for Shakespeare in Love. Iron Man baddie Obadiah Stane was played by this year’s Best Actor winner, Jeff Bridges, while Mickey Rouke played the sinister Ivan Vanko is the sequel after receiving a Best Actor Nomination.
Tucci joins Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, and Hayley Atwell. Casting for Captain America: The First Avenger is ongoing. The release date in July 22, 2011.
